The A350 measured 18.5 inches between armrests vs. 19.5 inches on the 777. In addition to having more space between the armrests, the middle armrests on the 777 folded up for even more space. On paper, the A350 should have had two inches more pitch, which should've felt like even more because of the thinner seats.
The new Boeing 777X will be the largest twin-engine aircraft ever launched. Of course, Airbus did produce the Super Jumbo A380, but four-engined jets are no longer the future. For twins, Boeing will dominate in terms of capacity. The larger 777-9 offers a typical two-class capacity of 426 seats; this compares with 369 for the A350-1000.

Now AA applied the same magic on its new 787-800 squeezing one extra seat in for each economy row, 3-3-3 hence 9 seats per row, comparing to JAL 787-800's 2-4-2, 8 seats per row in economy.
